\begin{abstract}
Recent developments in qudit-based quantum computing open interesting possibilities for scaling quantum processors without increasing the number of physical information carriers.
One of the leading platforms in this domain is based on trapped ions, where efficient control of systems up to six levels has been demonstrated.
In this work, we propose a method for compiling quantum circuits in the case, where qubits are embedded into qudits of various dimensionalities ($d$).
Two approaches, the first, based on using higher qudit levels as ancillas, which can be used already for qutrits ($d=3$), and, the second, embedding qubits into ququarts ($d=4$) are considered.
In particular, we develop a decomposition scheme of the generalized Toffoli gate using qudits of various dimensionalities, where the M$\o$lmer-S$\o$rensen (MS) gate is used as a basic quantum operation.
As our approach uses the MS gate, we expect that our findings are directly applicable to trapped-ion-based qudit processors.

\section{Introduction}
Despite remarkable progress in the development of semiconductor computing technology~\cite{Moore1965}, several types of problems remain practically intractable for existing computing architectures.
Examples include prime factorization and simulating (complex) quantum systems.
Quantum computing, which is based on the idea of manipulating entangled superposition states of qubits~\cite{Deutsch1985,Brassard1998,Ladd2010} (quantum counterparts of classical information bits),
is considered as a way to extend computational capabilities in solving hard computational problems including aforementioned tasks~\cite{Shor1994,Lloyd1996,Fedorov2022}.
However, developing large-scale quantum computing devices that allow solving practically relevant tasks is challenging;
in particular, it is problematic to find a physical platforms that admits scalability to large number of qubits without degrading the quality of the control for their interactions.
That is why the current frontier is to build noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices~\cite{Aspuru-Guzik2021}, where qubits are noisy and operations between them are imperfect.
Recent progress in developing NISQ devices has been demonstrated with various physical platforms including
superconducting circuits~\cite{Gambetta2018,Martinis2019,Pan2021-4}, semiconductor quantum dots~\cite{Vandersypen2022,Morello2022,Tarucha2022},
neutral atoms~\cite{Lukin2021,Browaeys2021,Browaeys2020-2,Saffman2022},
trapped ions~\cite{Monroe2017,Blatt2012,Blatt2018},
and quantum optical systems~\cite{Pan2020,Lavoie2022}.

One may note that the used physical systems are essentially multilevel, so their use as qubits require idealization.
A natural approach is to consider such systems as {\it qudits}, which are $d$-dimensional quantum systems ($d>2$).
Quantum computing with qudits has been a subject of an extended research activity during last decades~\cite{Farhi1998,Kessel1999,Kessel2000,Kessel2002,Muthukrishnan2000,Nielsen2002,Berry2002,Klimov2003,Bagan2003,Vlasov2003,Clark2004,Leary2006,Ralph2007,White2008,Ionicioiu2009,Ivanov2012,Li2013,Kiktenko2015,Kiktenko2015-2, Song2016,Frydryszak2017,Bocharov2017,Gokhale2019,Pan2019,Low2020,Jin2021,Martinis2009,White2009,Wallraff2012,Mischuck2012,Gustavsson2015,Martinis2014,Ustinov2015,Morandotti2017,Balestro2017,Low2020,Sawant2020,Senko2020,Pavlidis2021,Rambow2021,OBrien2022,Nikolaeva2022}.
Notably, the first realization of two-qubit gates has used two qubits stored in the degrees of freedom of a single trapped ion, i.e. with the use of a qudit~\cite{Wineland1995}.
Recent results include demonstrations of multiqubit processors based on trapped ions~\cite{Ringbauer2021,Kolachevsky2022}, superconducting circuits~\cite{Hill2021,Schuster2022}, and optical systems~\cite{OBrien2022}.
In particular, in the case of trapped ions~\cite{Ringbauer2021,Kolachevsky2022} efficient experimental control of systems with up to six levels with high-enough gate fidelities has been demonstrated.

On the top of overcoming various experimental challenges, the development of qudit-based processors also require new approaches for realizing quantum algorithms and, specifically, compiling quantum circuits having qudits as resource.
Already for the case of qutrits $(d=3)$, additional level is of help for decompositions of multiqubit gates~\cite{Ralph2007,White2009,Ionicioiu2009,Wallraff2012,Gokhale2019,Nikolaeva2022}.
In addition, one can consider qudit’s space as a space of multiple qubits, e.g. ququart ($d=4$) as two qubits~\cite{Kiktenko2015-2,Kiktenko2015,Kolachevsky2022}.
For larger available qudit dimensionalities, one may think of combining these approaches~\cite{Nikolaeva2021}.
In the case of trapped ions, the development of resource-efficient compilation schemes for various dimensionalities on the basis of native operations remains an important problem, which is essential for realizing quantum algorithms~\cite{Nikolaeva2021,Ringbauer2022,Ringbauer2023}.

In this work, we propose a method for compilation of qubit quantum circuits on trapped-ion qudits with various dimensionalities. For this purpose we develop several qudit-based
decompositions of the generalized CZ gate, where we use the M$\o$lmer-S$\o$rensen (MS) gate~\cite{Molmer-Sorensen1999,Molmer-Sorensen1999-2,Molmer-Sorensen2000}
as basic quantum operation.
For qutrits, our results are based on the development of decomposition the generalized Toffoli gate with the use of qutrit-based MS
gate.
Second, we consider approaches for decomposing multiqubit Toffoli gate using ququarts, which can be considered as a pair of two qubits.
Specifically, the qubit MS gate allows one to realize the controlled-phase gate between two qubits in two distinct ququarts as a single operation.
As our approach uses the MS gate, we expect that our findings are directly applicable for trapped-ion-based qudit processors.

\section{Trapped-ion-based qudit-based processor}

We first define a model of a trapped-ion qudit-based processor.
We consider a system of $m$ qudits with equal number of available levels $d$.
Basis states of each qudit ${\sf Q}$ are denoted as $\ket{0}_{\sf Q}, \ket{1}_{\sf Q}, \ldots, \ket{d-1}_{\sf Q}$.

As a basic set of available single-qudit operations we take Pauli rotations of the following form:
\begin{equation}
    \r{\phi}{ij}{\theta}=
    \exp(-\imath\sigma^{ij}_{\phi}\theta/2),
\end{equation}
where $\theta$ is a rotation angle, $i\neq j$ denotes two addressed levels of an affected qudit, $\sigma_\phi^{ij} = \cos\phi \sigma_x^{ij} + \sin\phi \sigma_y^{ij}$,
$\sigma^{ij}_\kappa$ with $\kappa \in \{x,y,z\}$ stands for a standard Pauli matrix acting in a two-level subspace spanned by $\ket{i}$ and $\ket{j}$ (i.e. $\sigma_x^{02}=\ket{0}\bra{2}+\ket{2}\bra{0}$), and angle $\phi$ specifies a rotation axis.
We fix notations for rotations around $x$- and $y$-axis:
$\r{x}{ij}{\theta}\equiv \r{0}{ij}{\theta}$, $\r{y}{ij}{\theta}\equiv \r{\pi/2}{ij}{\theta}$.
We also assume that it possible to implement a phase gate
\begin{equation}
\ph{i}{\theta} =  {\rm diag}(1,\ldots,1,e^{\imath\theta},1,\ldots,1)
\end{equation}
at any level $i=0,\ldots,d-1$; index $i$ specifies position of $e^{\imath\theta}$ element.

As a basic two-qudit operations, we consider phase-corrected~\cite{Ringbauer2022} qudit-based extensions of the MS gate of the form
\begin{equation} \label{eq:two-qudit-gates}
    \widetilde{\sf MS}_{\phi}^{ijkl} (\chi) = \exp(-\imath  \sigma^{ij}_{\phi}\otimes \sigma^{k\ell}_{\phi}\chi)
\end{equation}
where $\chi$ describes the duration of the gate, and pairs $(i,j)$, $(k,l)$ indicate addressed transitions in coupled qudits.
$x$- and $y$-axis-based rotations are denoted as
${\sf XX}({\chi}) \equiv \widetilde{\sf MS}_{0}(\chi)$ and ${\sf YY}({\chi}) \equiv \widetilde{\sf MS}_{\pi/2}(\chi)$.
In our consideration, we also employ a $z$-axis-based rotation realized as follows:
\begin{equation}
\begin{split}
    \zz{ijkl}{\chi} = \left(\r{y}{ij}{\pi/2} \otimes \r{y}{kl}{\pi/2} \right)\cdot\\
    \xx{ijkl}{\chi} \cdot \left(\r{y}{ij}{-\pi/2} \otimes \r{y}{kl}{-\pi/2} \right).
    \end{split}
\end{equation}
An ability to perform two-qudit gates is assumed for every pair of qudits, that is a natural assumption for trapped-ion-based platform~\cite{Ringbauer2021,Kolachevsky2022}.

We also assume an ability to perform a computational basis read-out measurement, described by positive operator valued-measure (POVM):
\begin{equation}
    {\cal M}=\{\ket{0}\bra{0}, \ket{1}\bra{1},\ldots, \ket{d-1}\bra{d-1}\}.
\end{equation}

We note that at physical level the set of allowable operations is narrower than the introduced one.
In particular, the set of directly addressable transitions is restricted by the selection rules.
However, it is sufficient to have a connected (yet not fully-connected) graph of addressable transitions inside a qudit, and the MS gate acting in a qubit subspaces, i.e.
\begin{equation}
    {\sf MS}_{\phi}^{01}(\chi)=\exp\left[-\imath (\sigma_\phi^{01}\otimes \mathbb{1}+ \mathbb{1}\otimes \sigma_\phi^{01})^2\chi/2\right]
\end{equation}
to obtain the introduced gate set.
Addressing the limited number of allowed transitions make it possible to construct single-qudit rotations at all transitions~\cite{Mato2022}, and construct $\widetilde{\sf MS}_{\phi}^{ijkl}(\chi)$ gate on arbitrary levels $i,j,k,l$.
All these transformations are realized via allowed single-qudit operation only.
Moreover, POVM ${\cal M}$ can be obtained from a projective non-demolition measurement described projectors
\begin{equation}
    {\cal P} = \ket{0}\bra{0},
    {\cal P}^\bot = \sum_{m\geq 1}\ket{m}\bra{m}
\end{equation}
and repeating this measurement interleaved with proper exchanging population between qudit's levels.

We then describe how to implement multiqubit gates using $\zz{ijkl}{\chi}$ and $\zz{ijkl}{\chi}$ operations with qudits of various dimensionality: $d = 3$ (qutrits)\footnote{Preliminary \href{https://conference.rqc.ru/session/3}{result} on qutrit-based decomposition was presented as a poster

}, $d=4$ (ququarts).
As it is shown below, these two cases are quite different from each other due to a the way of embedding qubits into qudits.

\section{Simplifying decomposition of multiqubit gates with qutrits}

The computational space of a qutrit ${\sf Q}$ can be considered as a space of a qubit ${\sf q}$ together with an ancillary level $\ket{\sf anc}$:
\begin{equation}
    \ket{0}_{\sf Q} \leftrightarrow \ket{0}_{\sf q},\quad
    \ket{1}_{\sf Q} \leftrightarrow \ket{1}_{\sf q},\quad
    \ket{2}_{\sf Q} \leftrightarrow \ket{\sf anc},
\end{equation}
In fact, this embedding corresponds to a standard qubit-based approach, therefore, to obtain a universal gate set for qubits' subspace spanned by first two levels of each qudit, one can consider a set of $\r{\phi}{01}{\theta}$ and $\xx{0101}{\chi}$ gates.
Note that this gate set does not populate the ancillary level, given that input state belongs to the qubit's subspace.

However, the ancillary level $\ket{\sf anc}$ becomes useful for implementing
multiqubit generalized Toffoli gate
\begin{multline}
    \cnx: \ket{c_1,\ldots,c_{N-1},t}_{{\sf q}_1,\ldots,{\sf q}_{N-1},{\sf q}_N}\\
    \mapsto \ket{c_1,\ldots,c_{N-1}, t\oplus {\prod}_{i=1}^{N-1} c_i}_{{\sf q}_1,\ldots,{\sf q}_{N-1} {\sf q}_N},
\end{multline}
where $c_i,t\in\{0,1\}$ and $\oplus$ stands for mod 2 summation (\cnx~gate inverts the last qubit, given that all remaining $N-1$ qubits are in the state $\ket{1}$).
To realize \cnx~gate, it can be decomposed into single-qubit and two-qubit operations~\cite{Barenco1995}, however taking into account the third level $\ket{\sf anc}$ makes it much more simple.

The V-shape ladder-like decomposition of \cnx~gate is shown in Fig.~\ref{fig:qutrit_toff}.
The idea of `descending' sequence of $V_1$s is to output ${\sf Q}_{N-1}$ in the state $\ket{1}$ if and only all input qutrits ${\sf Q}_{1},\ldots,{\sf Q}_{N-1}$ were in the state $\ket{1}$.
This goal is achieved by constructing $V_1$ in such a way that it outputs the `bottom' qubit in the state $\ket{1}$ only if both affected qutrits were in the state $\ket{1}$ before its application, and also given that the initial state of all qutrits involved in the considered \cnx~gate belongs to the the qubits' subspace.
$V_2$ makes an inverse of the target qubit in ${\sf Q}_{N}$ given that ${\sf Q}_{N-1}$ is in $\ket{1}$ after the sequence of $V_1$s.
The `ascending' sequence of $V_1^\dagger$s restores states of control qubits in ${\sf Q}_{1},\ldots,{\sf Q}_{N-1}$, possibly by removing population out of $\ket{\sf anc}$.
One can see that the described decomposition requires $2N-3$ two-qutrit $\xx{0101}{\pi/2}$ gates applied within nearest-neighbor linear coupling map.
To compare, known qubit-based decompositions of \cnx gate require ${\cal O}(N^2)$ two-qubit gates without using ancillary qubits and $12 N - 23$ two-qubit gates with $N-2$ ancillas~\cite{Barenco1995}.
We also note that the decomposition in Fig.~\ref{fig:qutrit_toff} is not just a straightforward realization of the previously proposed scheme from Ref.~\cite{Kiktenko2020}.
The important feature of the new decomposition is that it is constructed based on (phase-corrected) MS gate~\eqref{eq:two-qudit-gates} but not with a qudit controlled-phase gate of the form
\begin{equation} \label{eq:oldcz}
    \widetilde{\sf CZ}={\rm diag}(1,\ldots,1,-1)
\end{equation}
previously considered in~\cite{Kiktenko2020} ($\widetilde{\sf CZ}$ can not be obtained from single $\widetilde{\sf MS}_{\phi}^{ijkl} (\chi)$ by using single-qudit gates).

To sum up, single- and two-qubit gates of qubit-based circuits can be realized with trapped-ion-based qutrits in the same way as with trapped-ion-based qubits, while multi-qubit Toffoli gates can be decomposed with an assistance of ancillary level, that drastically decreases the number of required two-body interactions compared to the standard qubit-based decompositions.

\section{Quantum computing with qubits' pairs embedded into ququarts}

The new feature of ququarts, compared to qutrits, is that their space can be considered as a space of two qubits.
Namely, two qubits, ${\sf q}$ and ${\sf q'}$, can be embedded into ququart ${\sf Q}$ using the following mapping:
\begin{equation} \label{eq:level-corresp-d4}
\begin{aligned}
    \ket{0}_{\sf Q}&\leftrightarrow \ket{0}_{\sf q}\otimes\ket{0}_{\sf q'},\\
    \ket{1}_{\sf Q}&\leftrightarrow \ket{0}_{\sf q}\otimes\ket{1}_{\sf q'},\\
    \ket{2}_{\sf Q}&\leftrightarrow \ket{1}_{\sf q}\otimes\ket{0}_{\sf q'},\\
    \ket{3}_{\sf Q}&\leftrightarrow \ket{1}_{\sf q}\otimes\ket{1}_{\sf q'}.
\end{aligned}
\end{equation}
So, this approach allows storing $n$ qubits into $\lceil n/2 \rceil$ ququarts.
The introduced `qubits-to-qudit' mapping requires an update of ways how qubit gates have to realized.

Since each qubit ${\sf q}_1$ is always located together with some `neighboring' qubit ${\sf q}_2$ inside a qudit ${\sf Q}$, a single qubit gate $u$, acting on ${\sf q}_1$, have to be considered as a tensor product with the identity operator, acting on ${\sf q}_2$.
Depending on position of ${\sf q}_1$ inside ${\sf Q}$, i.e. whether ${\sf q}_1$ is ${\sf q}$  or ${\sf q'}$ in~\eqref{eq:level-corresp-d4}, the single-qudit unitary $U$ that implements $u$ correspondingly takes the form:
\begin{equation}
    \begin{aligned}
    U &= u\otimes\mathbb{1} =
    \begin{pmatrix}
        u_{00} & & u_{01} & \\
        & u_{00} & & u_{01} \\
        u_{10} & & u_{11} & \\
        & u_{10} & & u_{11} \\
    \end{pmatrix},\\
    U &= \mathbb{1}\otimes u=
    \begin{pmatrix}
        u_{00} & u_{01} & & \\
        u_{10} & u_{11} & & \\
        & & u_{00} & u_{01}\\
        & & u_{10} & u_{11}\\
    \end{pmatrix},
    \end{aligned}
\end{equation}
where uspecified elements are zeros and $u_{ij}=\bra{i}u\ket{j}$ [see also Fig.~\ref{fig:ququart_gates}(a) and (b)].
Given single-qubit gate $u=\r{\phi}{}{\theta}\equiv \r{\phi}{01}{\theta}$, the ququart-based realization takes the form
\begin{equation}
\begin{split}
    \r{\phi}{}{\theta}\otimes\mathbb{1} = \r{\phi}{02}{\theta}\r{\phi}{13}{\theta}, \\
    \mathbb{1}\otimes \r{\phi}{}{\theta} = \r{\phi}{01}{\theta}\r{\phi}{23}{\theta}.
    \end{split}
\end{equation}
Similarly, single-qubit gate $u=\ph{}{\theta}\equiv\ph{1}{\theta}$ can be realized by $\ph{2}{\theta}\ph{3}{\theta}$ or $\ph{1}{\theta}\ph{3}{\theta}$.

The realization of a two-qubit gate, e.g.,
\begin{equation}
    {\sf CZ}: \ket{xy}\mapsto (-1)^{xy}\ket{xy},
\end{equation}
that acts on qubits ${\sf q}_1$ and ${\sf q}_2$, depends on whether ${\sf q}_1$ and ${\sf q}_2$ belong to the same qudit ${\sf Q}$ or not.
In the former case, it can be realized with the single-ququart gate
\begin{equation}
    {\sf CZ} = \ph{3}{\pi}= {\rm diag}(1,1,1,-1)
\end{equation}
[see also Fig.~\ref{fig:ququart_gates}(c)].
In the latter case, we have to consider a 16-dimensional four-qubit (two-ququart) operation given by a proper tensor product of ${\sf CZ}$ with identity matirces.
To reveal a clue how it can be done, consider $\zz{0101}{\chi}$ gate acting at ${\sf Q}_1$ and ${\sf Q}_2$ given by
\begin{equation} \label{eq:zz0101chi}
    \zz{0101}{\chi} = {\rm diag}(e^{-\imath\chi},e^{\imath\chi},e^{\imath\chi},e^{-\imath\chi},1,\ldots,1).
\end{equation}
For $\chi=\pi$, we obtain an acquiring a -1 phase factor at four levels
\begin{equation}
    \begin{aligned}
        \ket{0}_{{\sf Q}_1}\otimes\ket{0}_{{\sf Q}_2} \leftrightarrow \ket{00}_{{\sf q}_{11}{\sf q}_{12}}\otimes\ket{00}_{{\sf q}_{21}{\sf q}_{22}}, \\
        \ket{0}_{{\sf Q}_1}\otimes\ket{1}_{{\sf Q}_2} \leftrightarrow \ket{00}_{{\sf q}_{11}{\sf q}_{12}}\otimes\ket{01}_{{\sf q}_{21}{\sf q}_{22}}, \\
        \ket{1}_{{\sf Q}_1}\otimes\ket{0}_{{\sf Q}_2} \leftrightarrow \ket{01}_{{\sf q}_{11}{\sf q}_{12}}\otimes\ket{00}_{{\sf q}_{21}{\sf q}_{22}}, \\
        \ket{1}_{{\sf Q}_1}\otimes\ket{1}_{{\sf Q}_2} \leftrightarrow \ket{01}_{{\sf q}_{11}{\sf q}_{12}}\otimes\ket{01}_{{\sf q}_{21}{\sf q}_{22}},
    \end{aligned}
\end{equation}
where ${\sf q}_{ij}$ is $j$th qubit embedded into ${\sf Q}_i$.
This operation corresponds to an inversed ${\sf CZ}$ gate a
\begin{equation}
    \overline{{\sf CZ}}: \ket{xy} \mapsto (-1)^{(1-x)(1-y)} \ket{xy},
\end{equation}
acting on ${\sf q}_{11}$ and ${\sf q}_{21}$, and and identity acting on their corresponding neighbors ${\sf q}_{12}$ and ${\sf q}_{22}$ [see also Fig.~\ref{fig:ququart_gates}(d)].
Realization of $\overline{{\sf CZ}}$ on qubit pairs $({\sf q}_{11}, {\sf q}_{22})$, $({\sf q}_{12}, {\sf q}_{21})$, and $({\sf q}_{12}, {\sf q}_{22})$ are correspondingly provided by $\zz{0102}{\chi}$, $\zz{0201}{\chi}$, and $\zz{0202}{\chi}$.
If needed, the inverse can be removed from by $\overline{{\sf CZ}}$ by implementing single-qubit operation.
Having an ability to apply $\r{\phi}{}{\theta}$ and $\ph{}{\theta}$ operations to arbitrary qubits, and two-qubit ${\sf CZ}$ or $\overline{\sf CZ}$ to arbitrary pair of qubits we obtain an access to the qubit-based universal quantum computing.

We note that considered way of realizing two-qubit gates on qubits embedded into distinct ququarts differs from the one proposed in Ref.~\cite{Nikolaeva2021} based on several applications of $\widetilde{\sf CZ}$ gate~\eqref{eq:oldcz}.

Unfortunately, an absence of ancillary states in the employed mapping~\eqref{eq:level-corresp-d4} closes a possibility of ancillary level-assisted simplification of multiqubit gates.
Yet, standard qubit-based decompositions can be used.
Note that some of two-qubit operations will appear acting on qubits in the same qubits, so the total number of required two particle operations generally will decrease compared to the straightforward qubit-based realization.
In this way, accessing four level ion-trapped qudits allow decreasing both the number of required particles to perform a given circuit and number of two-particle interactions.

\section{Conclusion}

We proposed a set of techniques for compilation of quantum circuits on qubits, embedded in trapped-ion qudits.
A feature of the proposed approach is the use of qudit-based generalization of M$\o$lmer-S$\o$rensen gate as a basic two-particle gate.
We showed that the implementation of qubit circuit on qutrits in this case can be reduced to the implementation of extended to qutrits space versions of single- and two-particle gates and the use of the qutrit-based method for multi-qubit gate decomposition, developed directly for trapped-ion qutrtits.
In case of ququarts, which space is considered as a space of two-qubits, we developed a way for the realization of single-qubit gates inside the ququart and introduced a method to realize two-qubit controlled-phase gate on two qubits embedded in different ququarts.
On the basis on single- and two-qubit gates arbitrary qubit circuit can be implemented on qubits embedded into trapped-ion ququarts.
We expect these results are directly applicable to trapped-ion qudit-based processors.

\paragraph*{Note added.}
While finishing the manuscript we have learned that the authors of \cite{fang2023} obtained a similar results on qutrit-based decomposition. However, the authors consider another basic two-particle interaction (Cirac-Zoller gate) and do not use 'qutrit' terminology in their work.

% Usage is at your own risk.

%version 0.9.6:
%	changed packaging so there isn't a compile warning any more
%	modified the meter command so that \meter[draw=blue]{} colours everything blue, not just outline.
%	added trash command
%	added \ctrlbundle command so that \ctrl works well with \qwbundle[alternate]. If you supple \ctrlbundle[2]{}, then the bundle only contains 2 wires instead of the default of 3
%	\qwbundle[alternate] now also works with the parameter \qwbundle[alternate=2] to only have 2 wires in the bundle.
%	added \midstick. Works a bit like rstick and lstick, but reserves space for the text. Can choose to have brackets=none|left|right|both (default is both). Gives better method for circuit identities and other things.
%	added "align equals at" key for setting circuit identities (specifies wire number that should line up with equals. can be non-integer)
%	added makeebit command. accepts one parameter which is the text. Haven't got tyling and different angles of the split working yet.
% added bundle option to supplement nwires and cwires.
%	fixed bug where you couldn't put a wire command after the declaration of a multi-qubit gate command.
%version 0.9.5:
%	fixed bug which meant multi-wire gates didn't work outside of an environment such as center.
%version 0.9.4:
%	added nwires and cwires options to gate command to simulate qcircuit's nphantom and cphantom
%	vertical text options for slice labels.
%	replaced macro for measuring width and height for greater reliability. disable auto spacing now unnecessary as things like \sqrt{} work in the gate label.
%	investigated possibility of high labels (multi-line labels, particularly for a multi-qubit gate). key disable auto height introduced.
%	now provides a quantikz environment, which is theoretically compatible with tikz' external library (entirely untested). Can still use tikzcd environment otherwise.
%	removed a tikzcd customisation fixing the baseline for one row circuits as this was messing with any manual attempts to adjust the baseline.
%version 0.9.3:
%	adjusted spacing of gate operation between in-circuit and overlay so that transparency looks better
%	Other gate spacing adjustments. multi-qubit gates in particular should look better. 'disable auto spacing' can switch this off, particularly for use with things like \sqrt{} in the multi-qubit gate label, which will throw a weird error.
%	gate command now takes two further optional parameters: minimum width and minimum height for each cell.
%	some consolidation of styling commands
%	global keys 'transparent' and 'thin lines' added. 'thin lines' gives a look more similar to the original QCircuit.
%version 0.9.2:
%	made 'wires' the default key, so [wires=2] now becomes [2]
%	added 'slice title', 'slices style', 'slices label style' key to control titles of slices under 'slice all'
%	better access to positioning of gategroup label.
%	now arXiv compatible (that was a challenge! they use old versions of packages)
%Previous versions:
%version 0.9.1:
%	added \cwbend gate for cornering classical wires.
%	made size of strike through for multiqubit gates stylable via the keys /quantikz/Strike Height/ and /quantikz/Strike Width/
%	added new \gate[swap] variant of swap (nearest-neighbour only).
%version 0.9.0:
%original release.
